Luiz was pushed forward into a holding midfield role for the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final win against Monterrey and he won a number of admirers in his new position.
The 25-year-old has received a lot of criticism since joining the club from Benfica in the summer of 2011 due to mistakes made bringing the ball out from the back.
But his boss believes that with a solid defence behind him he will be given a license to drive forward without fear of costing the side a goal.
"I encourage him to try things. I would be really worried if a player is not trying things in the final third," Benitez said.
"He's a player who likes to play and wants to help and win. He likes to be seen, to take a risk where it's necessary.
"At centre-back, you make one mistake and everyone sees. In midfield, it's easier."
