John Terry’s current five-year deal with Chelsea expires in a little over a year and he is getting a little worried that the club have not spoken to him about a new deal.
“I’ve got a year left at Chelsea after this,” Terry said in the London Evening Standard.“People have spoken about no new contract and this kind of thing but it’s not even on the agenda at the moment.“They may sit down with me once the season has finished and we’ll start talking then.“Whether it’s a yes or a no I’ll continue to give my very best until my contract finishes.”
Chelsea have made it clear with Drogba, Cole and Lampard that they will only offer one-year deals to players over 30. But it remains to be seen if Chelsea will offer Terry even that.
Terry is 32 now and has become a peripheral figure this season due to injuries and form. He is Chelsea’s highest paid player and I am sure that Chelsea would want Terry to take a substantial pay cut, something that I am not sure he would be willing to do.
There is also the baggage that Terry comes with these days. His snubbing of FA chairman David Bernstein last week was simply the latest incident that shines a negative light on the club. It remains to be seen whether Roman Abramovich’s purging of the Chelsea old guard will spare Terry, but I get a feeling that he will not be offered a new deal this summer.
