Jose Mourinho's second spell as Chelsea boss began with a comfortable 2-0 win over newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea fans have been waiting for this day since the return of Mourinho was confirmed earlier this summer and their side did not disappoint in a blistering first-half display.
There were just four minutes on the clock when Allan McGregor flew out of his goal and flattened Fernando Torres just inside the area to give away a penalty.
However, the Scotland number one made amends in fine style as he leapt to his right to keep out Frank Lampard's well struck spot-kick.
The reprieve didn't last long though as Kevin De Bruyne slipped in Oscar to clip the ball under the keeper and put the Blues ahead on 13 minutes. Chances continued to come at rapid intervals for the hosts as Hull struggled to stem the tide that seemed to be coming at them from all angles.
The second arrived just before the half-hour mark and came in some style too. Lampard made up for his earlier penalty miss with a spectacular long-range free-kick that McGregor just couldn't get a hand on as Chelsea threatened to run riot. McGregor was keeping Hull within touching distance almost single-handedly as the likes of Eden Hazard, Fernando Torres, Oscar and Lampard continued to threaten.
The second half was almost a non-event as Chelsea took their foot off the gas and Hull started to grow into the game a little themselves. Both managers may well be pleased with the outcome in the end as Steve Bruce's side managed to avoid a humiliating defeat while Mourinho enjoyed a comfortable winning return to the Premier League
