Jose Mourinho’s reunion with former El Classico rival Pep Guardiola ended in defeat as Bayern Munich beat Chelsea on penalties in the European Super Cup final.
The Champions League holders overcame the Europa League champions from the spot, after substitute Javi Martinez’s late extra-time strike forced the game to a shoot-out following a 2-2 draw in Prague.
Bayern started brightly, with Arjen Robben dancing down the left to set up European Footballer of the Year Franck Ribery in front of goal, but the Frenchman dragged his shot dreadfully wide.
But it was Chelsea who took then took the lead, Fernando Torres with a first-time volley, reminiscent of the Torres-of-old, following clever wing play by summer signing Andre Schurrle.
The early goal rallied the Blues, who were comfortable on the ball throughout the first-half, but the German side showed their class on the counter-attack and Petr Cech had to be at his best to deny Ribery, who tried to sneak a low curling effort round the big Czech stopper.
Torres had an opportunity to put the London team one-up into the break, but the Spaniard blasted his angled effort over the bar from ten yards.
And Bayern hit back just six minutes after the break, Ribery finally taking his chance with a low rifled shot from 25 yards that tucked under the stretching Cech, who maybe should have done better.
From then on in, the German side were superior, dominating the possession in a style clearly adopted by new coach and former Barcelona manager, Guardiola, but they couldn’t make their dominance count.
Things then got worse for Chelsea after Brazilian midfielder Ramires was shown a second yellow card for a nasty-looking challenge on Bayern’s new man Mario Gotze, but the game remained level to put the game to extra-time.
Belgian winger Eden Hazard needed just three minutes of additional time to put the Blues back in front, the 22-year-old skipping past two defenders before unleashing a powerful drive that flew past the struggling Manuel Neuer.
But the champions of Europe refused to lie down, and substitute Martinez forced the game to penalties with a tidy finish in the box to level the score in the dying embers, following a last-minute siege on the Chelsea defence.
The shoot-out that followed was a showcase of world-class spot kicks which left either keeper little chance of saving them.
But Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku’s low and soft effort was well saved by Neuer, and the German club celebrated their first Super Cup triumph at their fourth attempt.
