In a game where three points were vital in Chelsea’s bid to qualify for the next round of the Champions League, Roberto di Matteo’s men left Italy empty handed as Juventus exploited our defensive weaknesses and pulled off a 3-0 victory.
Goals from Fabio Quagliarella Arturo Vidal and Sebastian Giovinco gave the home side a well-deserved victory and the opportunity to qualify from the group.
Di Matteo decided to go for a more defensive look in the game and dropped Fernando Torres and replaced him with an extra defender, which has now left us needing Juventus to lose to Shakhtar Donetsk in the final game and us to beat FC Nordsjaelland if we do not want to be the first defending Champions to exit the Competition before the knock out stages.
We played some great stuff at times and threatened the Italians on a number of occasions but we could just not break them down and in the end, our biggest weakness could not keep a clean sheet and we have now conceded twenty-one goals in the last ten games.
It was not a great game to watch as a Chelsea fan and di Matteo needs to do something and quick, because the longer this slump goes on, the more there will be calls for his head.
It is clear that we are missing captain John Terry at the back and the current central pairing are missing the legends leadership and desire to win, but the fact that we started the game without anybody up-front is the clearest indication that we are in dire trouble and as soon as the transfer window opens in January, we just have to hope that Roman Abramovic brings a top-quality striker in, because we desperately need one.
