The Blues allowed the 22-year-old Dutch stopper to join the Eredivisie outfit for the second half of the 2011-12 campaign and all of last season.
And, following the arrival of Vitesse midfielder Marco van Ginkel to Stamford Bridge on Friday, the Blues' returning boss Jose Mourinho has given Van Aanholt the green light to move in the opposite direction for next season.
A statement on Vitesse's official website read: "Patrick van Aanholt will play again next season at Vitesse.
"The 22-year-old defender is hired for a season from Chelsea Football Club. Van Aanholt begins his third season in Arnhem."
It is thought Van Aanholt has a long-term future with Chelsea but he is well down in the current pecking order behind Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand.
