FRANK Lampard's 200th Chelsea goal has been lauded as a fantastic achievement by 'interim' boss Rafael Benitez, who says he can go on to set a new club goalscoring record.
Lampard's 19th-minute header was greeted by rapturous applause at Stamford Bridge, and none issued greater praise than the Spanish coach.
“I am happy because Frank scored 200 goals,” said Benitez. “A fantastic achievement for any player, but especially for a midfielder.”
Lampard now lies just two goals short of Bobby Tambling's all time goalscoring record of 202, and Benitez expects to see him beat that target.
“You can see him training and he is always working hard. We have a lot of goals still to play, so hopefully will score more goals,” he said.
“I said one or two months ago hopefully he can score 15 or 20 goals, and he will be happy and I will be happy.
“I will give credit, and I will not take any credit from Frank. It is a great achievement and I am really pleased with him.”
However, Benitez ducked out of questions seeking to pin him down on whether Lampard was the best midfielder he had worked with.
He said: “You are asking me about Gerrard and Lampard. Since I am here in England, always they are asking me about the same.
“Both are great players but Frank, because he is our player, is a fantastic player.”
